A Cat That Must be Dead - Case Study Video - February 2005

This one takes a little explaining... This video was created for my wife as part of a homework assignment of hers in the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) curriculum in which she is enrolled at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) through its distance learning program. The video was not technically part of the assignment, but my wife wanted to create one, so I agreed to help (which meant taking four days time away from my classes to shoot, record and edit the piece). Since it was part of her assignment, I put her name all over it. You will also find that there are textual references throughout the piece that do not make any sense (unless you are trained within the HCI disciplines) -- references to "gulfs" and "Ed's Spread", for example. Just ignore them - it's not important if you don't understand them. The assignment was to review various instruction manuals (some good and some bad) under different use cases. The one depicted here was a rather poorly structured animal rescue document set in an unlikely (though perhaps not entirely improbable) circumstance.

This piece uses a "Ken Burns effect" style of presentation, adding motion to still images, and was assembled using Final Cut Pro, with some segments composited using After Effects.
